OUR BOOKS

Phonics Shed’s Narrative Book Series

Phonics Shed packages includes over 160 teaching books which introduce children to all 44 phonemes and their corresponding graphemes through original stories featuring our Phonics Shed original characters such as Curly the Cat, Dusty the Dog and Monty the Monkey.

We have made these stories engaging and relatable so when they are not being shared by the teacher, the children can share them with adults and their peers. The vibrant colours and fun illustrations allow children to explore the stories on their own. It is important to us that the children are encouraged to enjoy reading as well as learning how to read.

The narrative books link directly with our teacher planning sequence which also includes traditional songs and rhymes, as well as relevant popular children’s books from beyond our scheme. Example booklists can be found here.
They are also supported by our series of decodable books and mirrored by our Phonics Shed game sequence.

Complete Fully-decodable Reading Scheme

Our collection of 120 fully-decodable books is composed almost entirely of words made up of grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) that a child has learned up to that point. With the only exceptions being previously covered CEWs and carefully selected character names. The progressive nature of the sequence allows children to read independently at every stage of the programme. Practising with such decodable texts will help to make sure children experience success and effectively develop phonic strategies.

This is in-line with the Ofsted inspection handbook which states that the sequence of reading books should show a cumulative progression in phonics knowledge that is matched closely to the school’s phonics programme. Ofsted’s advice is aligned with the expectations in the English Programmes of study in the National curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 in England which states the same.

In this example from Chapter 2, ‘Pat and the Pasta’, almost all of the words are made using the sounds s,a,t,p,i (the first five sounds of Phase 2) with ‘the’ being the only additional high frequency word.

Example sentences: Pat sits. The pasta tips. Pat naps.

The following decodable book is ‘Pat’s Pants’ where the focus is 'n'/n/.

Whilst childrens’ own reading should be led by reading aloud books which are consistent with their developing phonics knowledge, teachers and parents should continue to maximise opportunities for children to hear and talk about a rich and diverse range of stories and songs which may not be fully decodable by the children themselves. Phonics Shed planning ties in traditional songs and rhymes, relevant popular children’s books, as well as our own series of original illustrated narrative books.
