The interventions in this program are a condensed version of the Core Curriclum’s daily lesson plans and resources, that include the character PGC flashcards. Each grade has a corresponding chapter; Pre-K is Chapter 1, Kindergarten is Chapter 2, Grade 1 is Chapter 3, and Grade 2 is Chapter 4. Every PGC covered throughout each chapter is represented with a specific character and has its own lesson and activities for that specific PGC. Every daily core lesson also has an associated shorter intervention lesson for additional support. Each lesson includes multi-sensory instruction and activities that:

  • Support the acquisition of letter-sound correspondences
  • Use spiral review to help connect previous learning
  • Provide a movement for students to associate with each character and PGC
  • Provide many opportunities to distinguish and identify sounds and build phonological awareness skills (Ch. 1)
  • Allow practice with phonological and phonemic blending, segmenting, and manipulating (Ch. 2-4)
  • Allow practice with decoding words by segmenting sounds
  • Allow writing practice for letter formation and encoding words

This intervention planning can be used as a standalone phonics intervention, paired with our Phonological and Phonemic Awareness (PPA) lessons, or used alongside the Phonics Shed Core Curriculum for those who require additional support. It is not intended to be the sole source of conventional, everyday phonics planning.

The intervention plans are designed to be quick and last just 10 minutes, are intended for small groups or 1:1 consolidation of learning, and can be used alongside any phonics curriculum as a resource for struggling students. They can also be used for older students who need intense phonics interventions to catch up with their peers.

For Chapters 2-4, there is one intervention lesson for every PGC covered and several for the pre-reading, speaking, and listening skills in Chapter 1. The Chapter 1 interventions can be used to support children who are struggling with phonological awareness and other foundational skills. To help develop strong phonemic awareness, pair the interventions with the 15-minute Phonological and Phonemic Awareness (PPA) lessons. Combining both the Interventions and PPA lessons grant students the opportunity to practice identifying and manipulating sounds, as well as encoding and decoding, all in under 30 minutes!

The interventions require minimal resources and can be easily adapted to be covered more than once, if further reinforcement is needed. Like the main Phonics Shed Core Curriculum, they follow a set structure to make them easy to follow for both children and adults.
